Facebook Thailand's director says the goal is to encourage Thais to celebrate the New Year with their friends and families at a safe distance...but somehow it doesn't feel like the same thing.

Thailand is allowing traditional and religious Songkran celebrations this year after a two-year hiatus, but water fights and foam parties are still banned across the kingdom to prevent a new surge in Covid-19 cases. Facebook's parent company, which recently changed its name to Meta, is encouraging Thais to splash around in virtual water with "Songkran Together," an augmented reality effect available for use in Facebook and Instagram videos and stories.
